I have been enjoying the Glastonbury Occult Conference since 2014. This means that I have now attended eleven of the conferences, 2021 was cancelled due to the pandemic. It has become one of the events of the year that I feel really excited about and a community has developed around this conference. I was very honoured to be asked to deliver a workshop at the Conference for 2026. The ritual part of the workshop, which I later repeated at the IOT event “Chaos Streams beyond the Book,” consisted of connecting with chaos as the source of the multi verse via 108 Salutations followed by a Chaos Kirtan.
With this I am challenging the notion that Chaos magick is a post-modern approach to magick. I feel that chaos magick cannot possibly be bound to this one, single philosophical school of thought. This is because each individual school of philosophy is a paradigm and the core principle of chaos magick is paradigm shifting. Viewing Chaos Magick through one single philosophical lens is also in conflict with chaos magick’s concept of freedom of thought. By viewing chaos magick as solely this or that philosophy, then you are boxing in your range of experiences, instead of seeing the multiplicity of forms that chaos can take. Bearing this in mind, I decided to test my view that chaos magick encompasses a wider range of philosophies. I did this by taking a random philosophical paradigm and doing chaos magick through that philosophical idea for a period of time, then dropping it and moving onto a different one. What I am finding is that, yes, chaos magick is cross paradigmal when it comes to philosophical ideas.
The 108 Salutations comes from my Neo-Platonic experiments of viewing chaos as the monad that led to the creation of the multi verse. As Hesiod said in his Theogony, “In the beginning was chaos” and all that exists came from the chaos void.
I worked primarily with the ideas of Plotinus, who referred to the monad as “The Good” or “The One” and he described this as,
“Generative of all, The Unity is none of all; neither thing nor quantity nor quality nor intellect nor soul; not in motion, not at rest, not in place, not in time: it is the self-defined, unique in form or, better, formless, existing before Form was, or Movement or Rest, all of which are attachments of Being and make Being the manifold it is.” (Plotinus, The Enneads, Sixth Ennead, Ninth Tractate).
That sounds like a great description of chaos to me. Using these principles I mediated on chaos as the monad and all that exists as part of this monad via these 108 salutations which I wrote in a state of trance. Usually having done salutations this is followed by the chanting of a mantra. As this is a chaos magick ritual there is no pre-determined manta, instead a series of random noises are made, which is your individual expression of the sound of chaos, as in this paradigm we are all manifestations of the chaos force. In the accompanying video a series of cut ups is used to express that idea. The video can be found at the bottom of this post.
